Gladys Berejiklian has spoken of the embarrassing moment she recently suffered on the street in front of hundreds of onlookers in a candid radio interview.

Speaking to KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O on Friday, the New South Wales Premier said she was walking in the Sydney CBD when a passer-by in a car wound down their window to give her a piece of their mind.

‘I like to walk a lot. The other day in the city there were hundreds of people around and this young kid rolls down his window and he yells out “Gladys you suck”,’ Ms Berejiklian said, spelling out the last word.

After a good-natured ribbing from Kyle Sandilands that she was so politically correct she had to spell out something so mild, Ms Berejiklian continued.

‘Then [the heckler] just tooted his horn and sped off. And hundreds of people just turned and stared at me… so I said to my team “we’re driving on the way back”,’ she laughed.

When asked by Sandilands and co-host Jackie Henderson if that sort of thing hurts her feelings, the 50-year-old said she didn’t take comments like those too seriously.

‘No I think it’s a bit of fun… all of us are in public life, you guys for different reasons, and you know we’ve been trying to keep people safe for the last year and I feel like we’re all in this together,’ she said.

Sandilands told the Premier he had never had the same experience.

‘No-one’s ever yelled “you suck” to me… probably because they know I’d chase after them,’ he said.

‘Yeah in your Bentley,’ Ms Berejiklian added.

The vaccine rollout and the Premier’s opinion on speed cameras and the Waze app – which she said she wouldn’t trust to find unmarked speed cameras – were also discussed.

Ms Berejiklian said she had recently had the AstraZeneca vaccine and encouraged others to do the same saying we needed to ensure we do not become complacent.

‘If we eventually want to integrate with the world we need to get six million people vaccinated. We need to make sure we don’t fall behind,’ she said.

‘If you look at other countries like the US and UK where the vaccine rollout is progressing quickly, those countries might open up before the end of the year.’
