Castlevania and Resident Evil headline Games With Gold’s Halloween offerings

The two biggest names on Xbox Live’s Games with Gold lineup for October 2021 come from the Xbox 360 — and the Sega Dreamcast, originally. Castlevania: Harmony of Despair and Resident Evil Code: Veronica X headline the backward-compatible offerings for the Halloween-themed month.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is the high-definition remaster of 2000’s Resident Evil — Code: Veronica for the Dreamcast. The remaster launched for Xbox 360 (and PlayStation 3) in 2011.

The platform adventure Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is the fifth Games With Gold game with the words “Castlevania,” a colon, and “of” separated by two other words in its title. Symphony of the Night was offered in July 2019; Lords of Shadow in August 2019; Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD was free in December 2019; and Lords of Shadow 2 was available in March 2020. Harmony of Despair stands apart, however, by being a cooperative multiplayer take on the Castlevania formula.

The Xbox One games are Aaero and Hover. Aaero, which launched in 2017, is a rail shooter with rhythm and action elements. Hover, which also launched in 2017, is an open-world parkour game where the “Gamers,” rebellious heroes of a futuristic city, “fight against oppressing laws while performing incredible tricks and combos.”

Here’s the full lineup for October’s Games With Gold:

  • Aaero ($14.99 ERP): Available Oct. 1 to Oct. 31
  • Hover ($24.99 ERP): Available Oct. 16 to Nov. 15
  • Castlevania: Harmony of Despair ($14.99 ERP): Available Oct. 1 to Oct. 15
  • Resident Evil Code: Veronica X ($19.99 ERP): Available Oct. 16 to Oct. 31

Xbox Live Gold subscribers can still download three of the Games with Gold titles from September: Warhammer: Chaosbane (until Sept. 30); Mulaka (until Oct. 15), and Samurai Shodown 2 (until Sept. 30).
