Mario’s Rabbids Gun Predicted Chris Pratt’s Casting

It appears the casting of Chris Pratt in next year’s Super Mario film might have been hinted at by Mario + Rabbids well before the Nintendo Direct.

In an image comparison on Twitter, a user theorized that the casting of Chris Pratt in next year’s Super Mario Bros. animated film might have been hinted at by Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, well before yesterday’s Nintendo Direct. During Nintendo’s presentation yesterday, they made several announcements regarding the upcoming Super Mario Bros. animated movie set to release in theaters on December 21st, 2022. The voice of Mario will be none other than Chris Pratt, also known for his role as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, which has set the internet ablaze. Aside from that, Anya Taylor Joy will voice Princess Peach, Charlie Day will voice Luigi, and Jack Black will voice Bowser.

During a different Nintendo Direct a few months ago, Nintendo announced the sequel to the Nintendo-Ubisoft crossover Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, called Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. The game has yet to announce a specific release date, other than a vague 2022 arrival. However, Nintendo has teased some of its visuals. Much of the cinematic announcement trailer for the new Mario + Rabbids game takes place in space, on a spaceship; much like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. It seems like there are other similarities between the two franchises that – after the announcement of Chris Pratt’s role as the famed plumber – are starting to come to light, thanks to some observant and comedic fans.

Twitter user Diego9VII posted two images side by side, one from the Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope box art, and one from a Guardians of the Galaxy movie poster. Both Mario and Chris Pratt’s character, Star Lord, are wielding futuristic guns that bear a pretty striking resemblance. Mario and Pratt are also positioned in similar ways, with both figures looking toward the top left corner of their respective posters. Of course, there has been no comment from either franchise about the legitimacy of this connection.

Other Twitter users were more than happy to play along with Diego9VII’s humorous theory. One user even commented a graphic that combined the Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope box art with the Guardians of the Galaxy movie poster. Another tweeted a still of Star Lord, and drew Mario-like features (such as Mario’s iconic red hat and white gloves) onto the intergalactic superhero.

To add to this theory, the video game, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, launches on the Nintendo Switch next month. With both games on the same console, it’s within the realm of possibility for some kind of crossover to happen. The world of Guardians of the Galaxy is full of strange alien characters, from a dog with an astronaut suit to Groot, the walking-talking plant. Would something like a Rabbid really be that far-fetched? Perhaps by the time Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope arrives, Chris Pratt will make a cameo in some fashion, possibly as Star Lord or maybe just as a small voice-over appearance.
