Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld reveals in an interview that Kate Bishop survived Thanos’ snap during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The actress plays the young hero who trains under original Avenger Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner as he reprises his MCU role. The first two episodes of the six-part Marvel Disney+ series debuted on November 24th.
The snap Thanos (Josh Brolin) made in Avengers: Infinity War resulted in half of the universe being erased from existence in an event that has come to be known as “the Blip.” Although the half of the universe that was erased returned in Avengers: Endgame, five years had passed, and the world was changed forever. The effects of the Blip have been seen in many MCU projects. WandaVision showed the immediate aftermath with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings explored how society is readjusting. The event shook the entirety of the MCU, and now Marvel’s latest hero reveals if the Blip impacted her.
Speaking to The Wrap about her MCU debut in Hawkeye, Steinfeld was asked whether her character was caught in Thanos’ wrath. Steinfeld quickly confirmed that Kate wasn’t caught up in the Blip and had survived. Steinfeld then said that it is possible that Kate experienced loss during those events alongside the loss of her father, but reiterated that she survived, possibly hinting that the show mays depict Kate’s perspective on Avengers: Infinity War‘s events. Check out Steinfeld’s response below.
“No, I believe that we see her survive and we see, you know, loss there as well. And that didn’t happen to her.”
Though Kate’s Blip fate is never directly addressed in the first two episodes, the show hints at her whereabouts. Kate is revealed to be 22 years old during the events of the show, which is set in 2024, two years after Avengers: Endgame. Episode 1, “Never Meet Your Heroes,” features a flashback to show Kate during the battle of New York from The Avengers; she is roughly ten years old during the Chitauri attack. So if Kate were caught in the Blip, she would have been gone for five years, placing her at roughly 17 years old by the time of Hawkeye.
The Blip has become a fixed point in the MCU’s timeline that is impossible to ignore or write over, not only for the characters involved but for those audiences have yet to meet. Eternals even saw Tony Stark’s snap in Avengers: Endgame cause the awakening of the Celestial Tiamut and Ajax’s change of heart, starting off the events of the film. Though the events of the Infinity Saga are done, the aftermath will continue to echo through Hawkeye and beyond.
