According to a new rumor, AC Infinity is inspired by Unity’s Helix Rifts and could include remade missions from older games in the series.
Allegedly, the Helix Rifts in Assassin’s Creed Unity are inspiring the development of the franchise’s next major installment, AC Infinity, which may also feature remade missions from older titles. Roughly seven years after release, AC Unity continues to be plagued by its disastrous, buggy launch. Fans have grown to remember the Paris-set adventure more fondly over time, though, especially since it counts among the last titles in the series to follow somewhat of a classic open-world Assassin’s Creed formula.
Said formula faded with the advent of Origins in 2017, then Odyssey and Valhalla doubled down on Ubisoft‘s live-service approach to content releases, further distancing the Assassin’s Creed of old from that of today. The new project, codenamed Infinity, will reportedly delve even deeper in this regard, though the publisher itself has yet to confirm the specifics. What we do know is that Infinity’s production hinges on a cross-studio collaboration between series creator Ubisoft Montréal and the crew at Ubisoft Québec. And if a new rumor proves accurate, one of Montréal’s more divisive Assassin’s Creed entries could provide the bedrock for what lies on the horizon.
Reddit user Smooth-Earth2875 (via Comicbook.com) recently shared a post claiming to have knowledge of what form Infinity will take, based on alleged details from the incipient stages of production. GamingLeaksAndRumours mod Therabbidscot added a follow-up post to the thread, saying they’ve seen evidence from the leaker that seems “fake-able” but also “plausible.” At any rate, the leaked information itself suggests AC Infinity will take inspiration from Unity’s Helix Rift activities, each segment offering a “small linear experience with semi-open-world levels like the Hitman games.” These entries will apparently star different Assassins, all of whom should receive multiple missions. The leaker additionally claims that Ubisoft plans to use AC Infinity to “remake and retell” the events of older games in the franchise. Moreover, new content will supposedly launch over time for a price.
Of course, none of the above should be taken at face value. The Helix Rifts claim is something fans have kicked around for a while, though. In Unity, these side activities launched protagonist Arno Dorian into anomalies that revolved around different time periods of Parisian history. That Ubisoft might consider exploring this gameplay mechanic to its fullest extent hardly comes as a surprise.
While fans continue to wait for more Infinity-centric news, AC Valhalla just received a major update that added Discovery Tour: Viking Age to the mix. The exploration mode doesn’t mark the end of the Viking title’s post-launch support, either. A second year of content is currently in development; however, Ubisoft has yet to clarify what players should expect.
Assassin’s Creed Infinity is currently in development; Assassin’s Creed Unity is available to play now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms.
